WHAT THE SAFETY GUIDANCE SAYS

The shine has
a hidden mist.

BOOTH ONLY for 2K isocyanate paint

That deep, glossy finish usually comes from 2K paint.

HSE says almost all bodyshops use 2-pack isocyanate paints, and that breathing their spray mist is one of the main causes of occupational asthma in the UK. The mist is mostly invisible, does not smell and spreads like smoke.

THE SHORT ANSWER

2K paint is
a booth job.

Isocyanates are in more paints than people think.
HSE's advice centres on where and how you spray.

THE PAINT

Water-based is not isocyanate-free

HSE says isocyanates are used in some water-based paints, most base coats and almost all lacquers.

THE BOOTH

Never outdoors

HSE says never spray isocyanate paint outdoors (except SMART repairs): use a booth or room with proper extraction.

How sprayers work

THE RISK

Asthma with no cure

Vehicle paint sprayers are about 80 times more likely to get asthma than the average worker, HSE says, and once sensitised even tiny amounts can trigger an attack.

HOW BODYSHOPS DO IT

Four habits
behind a safe finish.

If your hot rod is going to a bodyshop for a 2K finish, these are the controls HSE expects to see. They are also why 2K spraying is not a driveway job.

  1. An extracted booth

A booth or room with local exhaust ventilation, run at slightly lower pressure so leaks draw air in, not mist out.

  2. Air-fed breathing kit

HSE says filtering respirators are not suitable for isocyanate paints: sprayers need air-fed breathing apparatus.

  3. A posted clearance time

Measured with a fog or smoke machine and marked on the door, so nobody enters or lifts a visor too soon.

  4. Regular checks

Ventilation examined at least every 14 months, plus health surveillance such as lung function tests for sprayers.

TWO NUMBERS WORTH KNOWING

Invisible mist,
measurable risk.

one on how long the mist hangs around.

≈ 80× more likely

Vehicle paint sprayers vs average worker

HSE's INDG388 says vehicle paint sprayers are about 80 times more likely to get asthma than the average worker. With continued exposure it can become permanent and severe.

ASTHMA RISK · HSE

20+ minutes

Time for a spray room to clear

A booth typically clears in less than 5 minutes, HSE says, whereas a room can take 20 minutes or longer. Sprayers must know their booth's clearance time.

CLEARANCE TIME · HSE

HSE says the only way accepted by the industry to check a sprayer's isocyanate exposure is biological monitoring of a urine sample.

A QUICK TASK CHECK

Where does the
exposure come from?

Pick a stage of a 2K paint job to see what HSE guidance says about it. The bar shows how strongly HSE links it to isocyanate exposure.

Spraying the lacquerMain source

HSE says spraying is the main source of exposure and causes most mist. It belongs in an extracted booth or room, with air-fed breathing apparatus.

Lifting the visor to checkDon't

HSE says many sprayers lift the visor to check their work while still surrounded by invisible mist. Keep it down until the clearance time has passed.

Cleaning the spray gunExposure too

HSE notes exposure may also occur from cleaning the spray gun, so protection should cover cleaning as well as spraying.

Curing and bakingWatch the booth

Exposure can also come from curing paint. In one HSE case, clogged filters let a booth pressurise during baking and leak mist into the bodyshop.

A water-based base coatCheck the label

Water-based means emulsion-based with fewer solvents, not isocyanate-free. HSE says most base coats contain isocyanates.

EARLY SIGNS

Easy to mistake
for a cold.

HSE lists early symptoms of isocyanate asthma: a recurring blocked or runny nose, sore or watering eyes, chest tightness often outside working hours, a persistent cough, flu-like shivers, wheezing and breathlessness.

In one HSE case, a mechanic using 2K paint with a filtering half-mask began wheezing in the evenings and thought it was flu. Two years later an acute attack put them in hospital. HSE also notes that skin contact may cause dermatitis.

Questions people ask

What is 2K paint?

HSE describes isocyanate paints as also known as 2K, two-pack or polyurethane paints. They are used extensively in motor vehicle repair, and almost all bodyshops use them.

Is water-based paint safe from isocyanates?

Not necessarily. HSE says water-based does not mean isocyanate-free, only that the paint is emulsion based with reduced solvents. Isocyanates are in some water-based paints, most base coats and almost all lacquers.

Will a dust mask or filter respirator protect me?

HSE says filtering respirators are not suitable for spraying isocyanate paints. The breathing protection must be air-fed breathing apparatus, which HSE says should include a low-flow indicator.

Why wait after spraying stops?

Fine mist takes time to clear. HSE says a booth typically clears in under 5 minutes and a room can take 20 minutes or longer, and sprayers should never lift the visor before the clearance time has passed.

Can isocyanate mist affect people who are not spraying?

Yes. HSE describes a bodyshop where leaking booths exposed everyone, with the receptionist the most highly exposed, and a small bodyshop whose self-built spray room contaminated the unit next door.
